Wishing for some Starless Nights!

Kathryn Andrews writes the kind of books that I read and then immediately reread because there is so much of the story that I was afraid I missed and so much that I just want to experience again.  Starless Nights left me with so many moments that I want, no I need, to experience just one more time.  Check out the blurb!

Beau Hale
She said that she was my best friend and then one day she wasn’t. Every day I live with the visible scars, but it’s the invisible ones that hurt the most. They are a constant reminder of everything I’ve lost as well as all the things that I’ll never have. I should be over this by now, it’s been years, but I can’t escape the memories that haunt me.  Everyone around me is moving on with their life, so now I need to do the same. Tennis brought me to Columbia University, and I am quickly proving that I will not let anyone defeat me, past or present. I am in control now. Life has taught me the hard way to remember that. But after all this time, I’m still searching for an answer to the one question that is constantly burning in the back of my mind…why?

Leila Starling

He said that he was my best friend, and then one day he wasn’t. It took one moment to change my entire life. What I thought I knew became a lie and nothing was ever the same. Slowly, I picked up the pieces and focused on what I could control…me. I live in New York City and attend one of the world’s most prestigious fashion and design schools. Day after day, I am getting closer and closer to making my dreams come true. I did this all on my own and no one can ever take it from me. I know my future is bright, even if my heart is destined to stay in the dark. The dull ache that still lingers is my daily reminder to rely on no one but myself. Although, after all this time, I still can’t help but wonder…why?

When I read Kathryn's first book in this series, Drops of Rain, I was blown away.  The depth of the characters, the drama, the love story, all of it just enveloped me into the story and I was blown away. I knew I would like Beau's story in Starless Nights, but I admit I didn't know if it could match up to Drops of Rain.  Wow did Kathryn prove me wrong.  Beau's story is so much deeper, more emotional, and full of surprises.  In Drops of Rain Beau is portrayed as more of a ladies man who has little feeling for those that are not in his inner circle.  In Starless Nights we learn that appearances can be deceiving and that under all that cool confidence is a man that gave his heart to one girl and is trying to cope with that loss.  When I started the book I already had this nervous energy because I knew that this story was going to be full of a lot of hurt and pain.  Kathryn's writing is so descriptive that I felt the emotions of these characters and at times, wanted the story to hurry along so that they could find the happiness they so desperately deserved.  The love story of Beau and Laila is beautifully scared, but so very perfect.  Kathryn, I am anxiously awaiting Matt's story, I have begun to buy tissues in bulk!  Steamyness is moderate, with 1-2 scenes that are beautifully written and very appropriate to this story.

Joey, Cole, Haden and Braxton have been a constant in my life since I was five, and I have loved being one of the guys.
I’ve been cheerleader.
I’ve been study partner.
I’ve been listener.
When we’re young, we don’t realize the profound impact certain people will have on our lives. I had no idea twelve years ago I’d meet four boys who would turn out to be my best friends, my soul mates - my barmy.
Now school is almost done, our last summer together is drawing closer, and I’m trying to hold on to what we have while I still can. After this we’ll have to say goodbye to each other, as our choices will take our lives in different directions. But I don't know if our friendship can survive once secrets and surprises begin revealing themselves to us at every turn.
When it’s all said and done, will our friendships remain unbreakable? Or will our once strong bond prove to be weaker than we anticipated?
Letting go is harder than I thought, but some changes are necessary.
And finding Laila…finding myself…may be the greatest journey of all.

“I guess we know the flavor of the week,” a female voice says from behind me, causing several others with her to laugh.
I know they’re talking about me. They’re always talking about me. It’s been this way since I was in seventh grade, but I’ve made it my mission to ignore it.
“She certainly gets around,” another voice chimes in.
Cole is sitting to my left, Haden to my right and both guys are staring at the field, but neither is paying attention to the game. I watch out of my peripheral as Haden’s forearm muscles tense and relax while Cole bites his lip. They are intently focused on the words being thrown at me, but keep quiet for the time being.
“She must be good because they all stick around,” a guy’s voice states in salacious tone that makes me nauseous.
I don’t wait for another barb to be hurled my way, even though I know it’s coming. I throw my arm around Haden and whisper something in his ear before kissing his cheek then turning to do the same to Cole. I lean forward to see Joey, who is next to Cole and give him a wink, “I’ll get you later, Baby.”
He shakes his head and laughs, “Why must you stir the pot?”
Haden smiles - proud of my display - and it pushes me on.
I turn to look at the three classmates who have stopped chattering long enough to watch my little show, jaws hanging open. I shrug my shoulders, and answer Joey, “I’m just giving them what they want.”
One of the girls, Kasey, looks at me and raises a brow, “And what about Braxton?”
I glance over to Cole who’s listening to everything, but is still watching the game. He smirks, as if he knows what’s coming and a smile of my own begins to break.
They are gawking at me when I turn and wet my lips before winking at the girls.
“If he wins, we all win,” I say huskily.
“Touchdown!” The announcer yells and the crowd jumps to their feet to celebrate. All but the three jerks behind me.

In the Zone

If you've read my blog for very long you would know I am a huge fan of author Catherine Gayle. Her Portland Storm Hockey series is one of my favorite sport romances and on my auto-buy list.  Her newest release, In the Zone, is another great addition to this series.  Check out the blurb:

22665636It was supposed to be a single night of fake names, half-truths, and anonymous sex. Neither of them was prepared for it to become more. Keith Burns, star defenseman for the NHL’s Portland Storm, was just looking for a way to pass the time and ease the loneliness of his lavish lifestyle. Brianna Hayden wanted to find herself—and maybe learn to love herself again—after health issues changed everything. Anonymity is the name of their game; the rules were laid down at the outset. But when a chance encounter brings them back together long after the game should have ended, all their initial rules get thrown out the window.

It isn’t long before partial truths and dancing around the pain of the past gets complicated. Their physical chemistry is off the charts, but it isn’t enough. They both want a future, but Keith has an unspeakable history involving his two brothers that he just can’t share with anyone, not even Brie. She needs the truth if they are going to have any chance at moving forward. If he can’t give it to her, it might land him a permanent spot in her penalty box. If Keith can get In the Zone, he’ll be on the forecheck—but Brie’s heart is the goal he’s seeking.

One of my favorite things about Catherine's hockey series, is that while a good part of the book is about hockey, the stories that play out off the ice are unique and deep.  Her stories contain real emotion and broken people; people that sometimes stay a little broken.  While people can heal, those breaks still leave behind scars that remind us of what we have been through and I think that is what Catherine wants to portray in her characters. Burnzie has been broken in a way that many of us will never experience and Brie's breaks are a little more common but still significant and painful.  I don't want to give much of the story away because I want you as the reader to experience all of it in it's full glory.  Trust me on this, you want to experience this story.  Catherine is a master at developing her characters and these two characters touched my heart and left me in tears quite a few times along their path to happily ever after.  If you like sports romance, please give Catherine's Portland Storm series a try and I think you'll become a fan. While all of Catherine's books contain steam, this one is a little steamier, and a tad more risqué.

Worth the Fall

If you've read my blog from the beginning you would know I am a huge Caitie Quinn/Bria Quinlan fan.  She knows how to write stories that not only make me laugh, but they touch the heart.  I have reread all of her books many times and they are perfect when I need that little boost to remind me that love and life, while not always perfect, is still sweet.  Check out the blurb of Caitie's newest release, Worth the Fall.

22732442Kasey Lane is having a bad week.

Her idea of success never involved losing her job, man, and apartment in 24-hours. Now, with nowhere to go and no way to pay for it anyway, Kasey decides it’s time for a fresh start, which means a new apartment, a new career, and…no men.

But as a magnet for ridiculousness and absurd brushes with the law, her start goes from fresh to stale in record time. It doesn’t help that Mr. Wrong keeps showing up during her adventures gone awry and taking over. Now, as Kasey plans her way to independence she has to decide if the only path to success is going it alone...or if maybe a partner in crime can make the journey sweeter.

If there was ever a character that I felt I could relate to it would be Kasey Lane in Caitie Quinn's newest release, Worth the Fall.  Just like Kasey, Murphy's Law sometimes applies to my life and situations I found myself involved in.  Kasey's luck quickly changes though because in Worth the Fall she has the gorgeous Max to catch her when she falls.  Max is a hunky cop, an all around nice guy and is that dream guy that we love to swoon over. I will admit that he was quickly added to my list of book boyfriends.  I have read all the books in this series and Worth the Fall has been my favorite. It was tough to top Ben and Jenna from It's in His Kiss, but Caitie did it with this fantastic cast of characters that include my faves Ben and Jenna.  Caitie Quinn is awesome at writing quirky characters that we all can relate to and those characters become dear to our hearts.  If you're looking for a laugh-out-loud-swoon-worthy romance, Worth the Fall is perfect!! Check it out!!

"I feel that Laces & Lace was one of the best books in the series, not only because it revolved around heavy matter, but also because it drug you through emotional turmoil and struggles and it wasn’t happy go lucky easy." ~ Amazon Reviewer: Kris

"Laces and Lace is a story of survival, bravery, and endearing love. A story of when two people collide and life without the other is miserable. After I read the prequel to Laces and Lace I was dying to read the full novel. This story touched my heart and I urge you to go get your copy!" ~ Brittany @ Spare Time Book Blog

"This is such a great read, with more steam than most of Toni's books! And so many laugh out loud moments, seriously - JT needs his own book, and it needs to be amazingly hilarious because I couldn't stop laughing! Overall? Laces and Lace was well worth the wait!!" ~ For Love and Books "Jac"

For the Win

I have read many books by author Amber Garza.  She always writes age appropriate YA/NA's that are great, clean reads.  Her story lines are realistic and emotional, yet not too heavy.  Check out the blurb on her newest release, For the Win.

23506947London Miller has one best friend.

She lives in the pages of the books she reads, preferring the safety of fictional worlds over the dark and scary reality of her own life. Books aren't her escape...they're her salvation.

Cooper Montgomery has one true love.

When he's on the mound, throwing a pitch, the darkness of his world fades away. The game is something he can control, something he can count on.

A twist of fate brings London and Cooper together, a curve ball that forces them both outside of their comfort zones. As they spend time together, a relationship begins to blossom and both of them start to believe that there just might be something bright and beautiful in their lives.

However, the game changes when your heart is on the line. You have to play with everything you have for the win.

For the Win is a YA.  The characters, Cooper and London are two very different people, experiencing high school in very different ways.  Cooper is your typical "Jock".  He is super focused on his baseball because he knows that he has what it takes to make it to the pros.  Yet, Cooper is still that typical boy who is easily taken by a pretty girl and a serious relationship is no where on his radar. London is the shy bookworm who just wants to blend into the background, survive high school, and escape to college.  After interviewing Cooper for the school newspaper, London's life is changed.  I really loved the dynamics of these two characters when they are pulled together by fate and realize that there is no fighting it, they are meant to be together.  The author does a great job of introducing these characters, their struggles, and their fears/insecurities.  I easily read this book in one day because once I started, I had to finish.  The story moves along quickly and there is not a lot of useless drama. My only complaint would be that I felt, after I read the story, that I would have liked to have seen these two characters older.  I know the reality of what they experienced is applicable to high school, but I felt that the maturity they exhibited was more conducive to college age.  I really wanted the epilogue to include them at an older age.  I wanted to know if these two made it past college but   that's just me being curious because I become so invested in these characters and wanted to see them happy.  Steamy-ness is light, but very realistic and will still give you plenty of butterflies.

Assumptions by Melanie Codina

What happens when a girl set on playing by the rules …

Leeann Bradley is a college graduate who has achieved many of her personal goals, all because she follows the rules she’s set for herself. It’s simple. You work hard, enjoy life, surround yourself with friends and family, avoid jumping to conclusions … and oh yeah, don’t date jocks. These rules have worked well and have taken her down the path she wants in life. So what’s a girl to do when temptation, in the form of a sexy college soccer player, is placed right in the middle of that path? Deciding when to break the rules has never been easier for Leeann. But when assumptions are made, and more than just the rules are broken … will she be able to find her way down that path again? And what happens when it’s no longer the path she’s meant to take?

Finds a guy worth breaking them for …

Until now, Jonathan Baxter had one primary focus in his life, soccer. All decisions made, have been based on how it could affect his ability to play soccer. His grades, his choice of college, any type of extracurricular activities, were all carefully assessed. All of it has made playing college soccer possible. But when an injury sidelines him for the foreseeable future, and jeopardizes his dreams, he has to work even harder than before. Rehabilitating his injury becomes his primary objective. Until he meets Leeann, a physical therapy assistant whose touch has the ability to make him lose focus. She has him thinking there could be more in his life—in his future—than just soccer. So what’s Jonathan to do when Leeann assumes he’s just like every other jock out there? He has to prove her assumptions wrong.

Melanie is an amazing mother of four, an awesome and tolerant wife to one, and nurse to many. If you don't believe her, just ask anyone in her family, they know what to say. She is also a devoted chauffeur, the keeper of missing socks, a genius according to a seven year old, the coolest soccer uniform coordinator according to a thirteen year old, and the best damn mac-n-cheese-with-cut-up-hot-dog maker in the whole world. Well that last title isn't really official, but it's still pretty cool to be called it.

When not being ordered around by any of the kids, you can find her with her nose in a book or on the sideline of a soccer game cheering on one team or another. But that's mostly because she has a thing for the coach. When not doing all of the above, you can find her obsessed with a group of fictional characters all vying for a spot on the page of whatever she's working on. It's a fun and crazy life to lead, but she wouldn't have it any other way.

It's Game ON!!

I have had the opportunity to read and review Collette West's past releases, Night Games and Game Changer, so I jumped at the chance to read her newest release, Game On.  Check out the blurb:

Pitching phenom Bruce "Jilly" Gillette has a hard time talking to women. His hulking presence of tattoos and muscles is what makes him an intimidating closer on the mound, yet off the field, he's painfully shy, uncomfortable in his own skin. Desperate to revamp his loner image, the New York Kings hold a dream date contest, granting the lucky winner a night on the town with their surly reliever, doing whatever it takes to force Jilly out of his comfort zone. Hailey Halpert enters the contest on a whim, looking for answers as to why her high school relationship with Jilly hit the skids. Now she’s a popular romance author writing under a pen name, and her reappearance in Jilly's life is no accident. It turns out that her novels are all about the sexy players on the Kings, and Jilly has no clue that he's about to become her new leading man.

I really like the premise of a non-playboy baseball player that is quiet and a little misunderstood. Jilly is one of my favorite players on the team and I think his story is a nice addition to the series.  I liked Hailey at the beginning of the story, but I must confess, as I learned more about her relationship with Kurt, her image became a little tarnished to me. Jilly and Hailey's relationship is definitely a rollercoaster of emotions, but it did keep the story moving and my interest high on seeing just how this story would end.  Collette West did a great job at developing these characters and letting the reader see just how much these two cared for one another.  While at times I did feel their emotions were a little too back and forth, I understand their insecurities with one another and hoped for that happily ever after.  The appearance of past characters was great and the foundation of future stories was started.  I definitely can't wait to read the next book in the series.  Although this is a series, each book can be read as a stand alone.  Steamy-ness is moderate, with one or two tasteful scenes.

About Collette West

Collette West grew up as somewhat of a jock-nerd hybrid. Entering the world three weeks premature, her dad nearly missed her birth because he had seats behind the dugout for a sold- out, highly-anticipated match-up between two of baseball's biggest rivals. Not to be outdone, her book-loving mom taught her how to read by the time she was three. A love of the game coupled with an appreciation for the written word were instilled in Collette's impressionable brain from a young age. No wonder her characters believe in the philosophy: sports + romance = a little slice of heaven. Splitting her time between the Pocono Mountains and Manhattan, Collette indulges her inner fangirl by going to as many games as she can from hockey to baseball and downloading every sports romance novel in existence onto her iPad. When she's not clicking away on her laptop, she enjoys walking her dog in Central Park, satisfying her caffeine craving at the Starbucks on Broadway and keeping an eye out for Mr. Right. But above all, she loves dishing with her readers. Email her at collette_west@yahoo.com. She is the author of NIGHT GAMES and GAME CHANGER.

Not Quite Forever

Catherine Bybee has been, and will always be, on my auto-buy list.  I have read almost all of her contemporary romance books, I'm on her street-team, and I had the pleasure of meeting her at RWA last summer.  Her books are always a sexy fun read and Not Quite Forever has quickly become one of my favorites, check out the blurb:

The touching and heartwarming fourth novel in the wildly popular Not Quite series from New York Times bestselling author Catherine Bybee.

Romance author Dakota Laurens believes that happily-ever-afters exist only between the covers of her sexy novels. But to her surprise, she finds a real-life hero when she meets a handsome emergency room doctor. The outspoken author feels an instant and intense attraction to Dr. Walt Eddy, and the feeling is mutual. When the globetrotting doctor pulls a disappearing act on Dakota, she’s prepared to write him off…until fate brings a blindsiding twist to her story.

Still scarred from a past tragedy, Walt may have disappeared on Dakota, but now he’s determined to win her back. For the first time in years, he knows he’s ready for a new chance at love. Yet between Dakota’s doubts and two sets of meddling parents, can the once-blissful couple finally create the bright, loving future they desperately want?

Not Quite Forever had me hooked from the first sentence.  Can it get any better than the characters attending a romance convention?!?  I've been to a couple of these conventions and loved Catherine's descriptions! I knew I would love Dakota from the first page.  Dakota was a little sarcastic, very confident, and a perfect match for Walt. Walt is so swoon worthy and could easily be called Dr. McHottie.  If you've read other books by Catherine, you know she writes the best heroes. The characters in this story are well developed, full of personality, and fun.  The story line moves quickly and before I knew it the story was over and I was craving more!  Characters from other books in this series have cameo's and it's like visiting your favorite town and catching glimpses of family members that you haven't seen in a while.  Steamy-ness is hot, but tasteful, and will leave you wanting more. Check out Not Quite Forever!
