What Happens at Book Club...Beauty and the Mustache

A few weeks ago I introduced you to Shannon, my amazing friend who has the best book club ever!  If you don't believe me, check out her first guest post here.  Shannon's post was so popular that I forced, I mean I asked her very nicely, for another peak into her awesome book club! This installment of What Happens at Book Club features Penny Reid's Beauty and the Mustache.  Check out Shannon's post!

There are good books and there are books that are good for book club discussions. Sometimes readers are lucky enough to find a book that not only meets, but exceeds both criteria. Beauty and the Mustache by Penny Reid is a two-for!  It has depth and breadth. It is thought provoking and entertaining. It promotes not only lively discussion and debate, but also produces laughter and levity.

Penny pulled a switcheroo, the proverbial wool over our eyes, with this installment in the Knitting in the City series. From swoony men and old-school romance to a healthy dose of angst, grief and loss, ALL THE FEELS and a colorful rainbow of characters are woven throughout Ashley’s story. Oh, and the touching and hilarious sibling dynamic is the perfect base layer in this warm blanket of good bookness.

Beauty and the Mustache wasn’t What Happens at Book Club, Stays at Book Club’s first Penny Reid Rodeo. No siree! I had a feeling, however, that it would be impossible to recreate the magic=insanity of our original “Knit Night” gathering for Neanderthal Seeks Human.

As the boss of book club, I plucked lovely threads from the novel and knit them into a fun, feel-good and philosophical gathering.

Poetry and Pie
Red Wine and Moonshine
Buttered Biscuits and Beards
Nietzsche and Knitting

Reading is a solitary activity, and can be a deeply personal one as well. But after reading a uniquely amazing book, a book that brings people together, a book like Beauty and the Mustache, there is no better way to spend an evening with friends than sharing the experience.

Everyone head over to Shannon's Facebook page, What Happens at Book Club.  Like her page and tell her Angie Bookworm sent you and I will choose a random commenter to win an ebook copy of Beauty and the Mustache!

Mike Osborn woke up in a hospital in Germany three years ago. He was breathing. They had saved him.
Double Blind Study has been through every rock and roll cliché ever contrived. When their drummer nearly dies from a drug overdose, everything changes. Life is important again. Living is important again.
No one knows that better than Mike. So why does he feel like even though he's breathing and he's happy, his heart isn't beating the way it should be? Maybe it never did.
When Mike meets Clarke Matthews for the first time, he knows he should stay away from her. He knows too much about her and what she's been through. But for the first time, his heart has found another with a rhythm that matches his own. Every beat explodes a beam of light to illuminate his darkness.

Mike's been living life raw, unplugged. He's close to a reckoning. When it all comes apart, and he's faced with every mistake he's ever made, will the darkness win out? Or will the steady drum of a healthy pulse finally pull him into the light for good?

Two broken hearts.
One night to set each other free.

Almost dying from an undiagnosed heart condition means every second of your life is a precious gift to be guarded.
Lena Pettitt was born a miracle.
And her parents never let her forget it.
Even if that daily reminder kept her from experiencing the one thing they were trying to protect most--her life.

Gabriel Martinez’s heart has been ripped out.
His pride has been stomped on.
Oh, and he now has an arrest record that’s caused an even bigger rift between him and his DA mother. All for a love that wasn’t really true.

Now he’s exiled to his grandmother’s, working on his late grandpa’s old Corvair when a shivering girl knocks on the garage door. Lena, left alone for the first time ever, has locked herself out of her house--in the snow. Gabe knows he could help this girl get back inside her house--but that may mean missing the next train to Boston to pick up the part he’s spent eight weeks tracking down. She can wait for him at his grandmother’s or…

A few hours, an aluminum valve cover, and some strong coffee later, neither Gabe or Lena can feign disappointment when they race to the station and arrive just as the last train home from Boston is pulling out.

As jaded as he is, Gabe can’t deny the fact that he’s excited to spend the night exploring a city he knows nearly every corner of, with a girl who sees magic in the simplest things.

Lena has been waiting for her tiny world to crack open her entire life. Now that it’s finally happened, she finds the only thing she can focus on is the unexpected tour guide who opens her eyes to possibilities she never imagined.

All they have is this one night, together, under the bright moon in a city full of hidden beauty.

It’s one night that will change how they see the world and the paths their hearts will take forever.

Excerpt
“Gabriel.” Her voice is sharp and wakes me up like a bad nightmare.
I pull myself up to sitting, touch my cheek, and wince at the pain.
“Did…did someone hit me?” I ask, working my jaw back and forth. It doesn’t feel good. “Did a cop hit me?” I blink a few times, trying to put together the memory of what happened before I took a solid right hook to the jaw.
My mom scoffs.
“The official report says that another protester hit you, though I suppose it could’ve been a police officer. I don’t want to hear another word about that though,” she says. Her arms are folded tightly over her chest and she taps one shiny, black heel with each clipped word.
“I just—”
“I told you to stay away from her,” Mom says, then holds one hand up. “All of this could have been avoided if you just would have listened to me and stayed away from her.”
I don’t answer, because I have no defense. This is the one time my mom has ever been right as far as I’m concerned.
“Never mind, we don’t need to discuss that now. What we need to do is get you out of here. I’ve already signed all of the paperwork,” she says.
Don’t have to ask me twice to leave the white cinderblock walls and the comfort of the matching cement bench.
“Thanks, Ma,” I say.
She shakes her head. “Oh, don’t you thank me, Gabriel. The man you punched—the man you assaulted at that protest—he was a police officer.”

In Honor of the Royals in the World Series and baseball pants....

Baseball season.  Women all over the world love baseball, but I truly believe the motivating factor for a lot of these women is not just the game, but how those players look playing the game.  What could be better than baseball players and their pants? Nothing! Well, maybe Aaron Rodgers in his football pants, but that's another post for another time.  Since the Royals are in the World Series and this book is all about baseball, I want to recommend this book to all of you. Get ready to meet Cole Collins....

The Practice Proposal (Suddenly Smitten, #1)

Liza Sutherland isn’t looking for love. Not from a charity-auction date she didn’t even bid on and especially not with Nationals first baseman Cole Collins, the guy she obsessed over as an awkward teenager. She won’t get involved with a notorious player, no matter how attractive Cole is.

Cole Collins is up for contract renegotiation, but after too many late-night parties, he’ll need some positive publicity before he can make the roster. His agent, Frank, pitches Liza as the perfect prop…only Cole didn’t account for Liza no longer being just a teenager with a crush. She’s gorgeous and smart and he’s instantly hooked.

When Frank makes Liza a deal she can’t refuse—a bet she will fall in love with Cole or a cool half mil goes to charity—the game is on. But neither bet on the real feelings that surface. Could a fake fling turn into an official forever?

I love this book.  There really isn't anything about this story I don't like.  It has humor, romance, and most importantly, Cole Collins.  Cole is rugged, sexy, funny and he plays baseball.  Did I mention he plays baseball?  I can't help but think that he looks really, really good in those baseball pants...*stares off into space imagining this*....(Sorry, I tend to get a little sidetracked when Cole is involved.)  Liza is that girl that we can all relate to.  She's not pretentious, not anywhere near perfect, and she's afraid of having her heart broken.  Plus, she has had this huge crush on my man Cole for years.  When Cole and Liza reconnect there are major fireworks, sweet romantic moments and lots of laughter.  The two of them together just make my heart happy.  The angst in this book is on the lighter side, which to me makes this the perfect read when you need a pick-me-up or just want to get lost in a story without a lot of heavy undertones.  I have re-read this book many times and each time I still get butterflies in those sappy moments and it is easily one of my favorite books of all time.
Steamy-ness is light and totally perfect for the story.

Gwynneth with two n's....

I want to tell you about a great romance that I have re-read several times, Gwynneth Ever After by Linda Poitevin. I LOVE celebrity romances and found this one last year as I was hunting for something new to read. Nevermind that I have several unread books on my Kindle, and by several I mean over 2...with a few zeros...it's an addiction, what can I say?!? Gwynneth Ever After is a refreshing, mature romance that I really enjoy and hope you will decide to read for yourself.  Check out the blurb:

17874990
Gwyn Jacobs doesn’t believe in fairy tales. Ever since her ex-husband walked out, leaving her alone with three small children, Gwyn has been mother, father, and bread-winner all rolled into one. Her own scarred heart aside, she refuses to open up her children’s lives to the possibility of another heartbreak, and so she has an unbending policy of no dating and no unattached men in their lives.

Until her very own fairy tale falls into her lap...and the hero won’t take no for an answer.

**NOTE: This book is currently being released as a serial read on Wattpad -- a great way to check it out for free!**

I think one of my favorite things about this book is that the characters are mature, normal people who meet.  The drama is realistic, not ridiculous.   Gwyn is a single mom, extremely busy, and maybe a little (or a lot) frazzled.  Gareth is a man in his forties who is trying to right a few wrongs and make up for past mistakes all while avoiding the spotlight as he is a well known actor. They meet in a simple way and Gareth fits into her life as though he has always been there. Gareth's character is mature and I love that because he is a celebrity we aren't constantly told/reminded of his womanizing ways.  His past conquest are in the PAST.  Sure it's mentioned, but it isn't constantly stressed as is with most books. I don't know about you, but when an author is describing their leading man and wanting that reader to fall for him, constantly telling how much of a man slut he is can get a little old.  And why do we just assume that because a man is a celebrity then he must be totally weak when it comes to the ladies?!? Sorry for the rant, I didn't mean to vere off topic.  Anyway...I don't think there was a time in this story that I didn't love Gareth and Gwen.  Linda Poitevin does such a fantastic job of developing these characters into people that you feel you've always known and you can't help but cheer for them as they find their happily ever after.  Steamy-ness is mild, but wildly romantic.

Did you see that Gwynneth Ever After is FREE on Wattpad??  Go get it!!!

An Inconvenient Desire

Last summer I read An Inconvenient Love by Alexia Adams and enjoyed it.  You can read my review here. Alexia's newest release, An Inconvenient Desire, is out and ready for you to read! Check out the blurb:

Investment banker Jonathan Davis has spent the last ten months renovating his Italian villa and getting over a nasty divorce from his supermodel wife. As a favor to a friend, he escorts Olivia Chapman to a medieval festival and can’t help but fall for the gorgeous woman. When he discovers she’s a model, however, his innate sense of risk analysis tells him to bail. Then his ex-wife abandons his previously unknown daughter at his door, and it’s Olivia who steps in to help. But does Jonathan dare capitalize on his desire and venture his heart again?

Olivia Chapman has hidden her ugly childhood scars under the glamour of her modeling career. She thinks her pretty face is her only asset, until she discovers a talent for motherhood when a frightened toddler literally arrives on the doorstep. Olivia can’t bear to see another child go unloved. But caring for Hannah means staying with Jonathan, a man she finds almost impossible to resist.

When a big surprise leaves both Olivia and Jonathan reeling, their mutual attraction could end up destroying their futures … or healing the past once and for all.

It took me a few days to read this book, and I think it was because in the first few pages of the story the characters are already wanting to rip each other's clothes off and that was after one look.  I'm all for a little heat, but I prefer a slow build, or I at least don't want it thrown at me at the very beginning.  This is totally a personal preference and in no way affects the author's writing.  I did enjoy the couple, and the relationship does start to show that it's actually going to be a slow simmer and not premature explosion.  Jonathan and Olivia were likable characters that you wanted to see get together and get their happily ever after.  After my initial hesitation, the story grabbed my attention and the story line moved quickly.  I enjoy Alexia's writing and if you're a fan of the shorter, more compact romances, her books are perfect.  Steamy-ness is moderate.

Someday Maybe......

I am a huge Ophelia London fan.  I have all her books and she is one of my go-to authors when I need a fun, great, butterflies-in-your-stomach romance.  Someday Maybe didn't disappoint!  Check out the blurb:

Some guys are impossible to forget.

Rachel Daughtry has a 10-year plan that leaves no room for mistakes. Or not-so-serious boys—including Oliver Wentworth, the freshman boyfriend she's never forgotten. Now she's back in San Francisco with an awesome-slash-scary new job. Unfortunately, The Plan doesn't cover things like meeting her best friend's new “secret” guy...Oliver.

Fortunately, no one knows that Rachel and Oliver were ever together, and endless bikini wax torture couldn't make Rachel hurt her friend. But it's killing Rachel. She's not over him. Not even a little. And as her 10-year-plan crumbles around her, Rachel realizes that maybe—just maybe—Oliver feels the same way.

Now Rachel is on the verge of losing all control. And her best friend. And the love of her life...

When I started Someday Maybe I was hoping it was going to be great like Definitely, Maybe in Love, but not the same. I wanted same fun story, but not a replica, and it wasn't at all!  Oliver and Rachel's relationship was fantastic, heartbreaking, and a great reminder that true love knows no time.  I admit, it was a little hard to read the flashbacks knowing, that at the beginning of the book, these two were not together.  Ophelia did a great job at using those flashbacks to set the stage, and demonstrate how much in love these two were.  Skipping to the present, the story follows Rachel so closely that you really understand her,  see why she did what she did, and how her heart has suffered.  All of this together just makes the end that much more special!  Bonus for all of you that read Definitely, Maybe in Love, our favorite couple have a few "guest appearances" and those scenes are very memorable and will put a smile on your face.  Steamy-ness is light with a little more detail than Ophelia's previous books, but still very clean and very romantic.

Chapter 1 – One Year Ago
Dan

My hand shot left and landed on the alarm clock, silencing its incessant beeping. There was no point even setting it. I’d been awake for hours, anyway, but inside my nerves were having a hay day. Heartbeats thudded against my chest as I sucked in deep breaths trying to calm myself.
“Fuck it,” I muttered, kicking my heavy comforter off.
I swung my legs over the edge of the bed and ran a hand through my messy morning hair. My eyes traveled to the phone on my nightstand. I picked it up, sent a quick message to my brother, then tossed it beside me on the bed and made my way to the kitchen in nothing but my boxers. After dumping coffee grinds into the maker and setting the machine to brew, I braced my arms against the white countertop and stared down mindlessly while I waited. Your brain knew when something was important. It wouldn’t let you think of anything else. It was all-consuming. Today, it might just be the death of me.
I filled my lucky Denver Bronco’s mug and paced my way through the house. Wearing a path in the floor was the only thing slowing my thoughts. I downed a few sips and stopped in front of a tall bookshelf. A covered box containing all my letters from Jase was nestled there.
It had started out as a joke, but neither of us could stop writing. I told him I had a mailbox at college and then every week I had a letter waiting for me. And every week I’d write him back. I saved them all. His latest had me smiling hard. He was happy. Really happy—thanks to her. I needed to meet that girl. My eyes caught a glimpse of the clock; it was nearly time.
I took a shower and slipped on a pair of worn jeans, a plain tee, and my Nikes. Sucking in a deep breath, I grabbed my keys and left, bracing myself for the day ahead.
I was only an hour into my drive when the red engine light caught my eye. It came on every once in a while, so I pushed it to the back of my mind. My foot pressed a little harder on the gas pedal. As the needle on the speedometer crept higher, a new light on the dashboard lit up. And then it happened—my car started to shut down. “Fuck.” I banged my fist at the wheel as the car slowed. But no amount of banging or cursing helped. I veered to the shoulder of the highway, dodging car after car. Finally, the piece of crap stopped dead.
“No, no, no. Don’t do this to me now.” I pounded the steering wheel again, ready to beat it to death. “Not today. Damn it!” I reached for my phone in the cup holder, dialed the number for Triple A, and within minutes the rep said a tow truck would be on its way. Estimated time of forty-five minutes. Great.
It was too important of a day to be starting out like this. I only prayed things turned around.

Most Definitely, Maybe in Love!

Check out this awesome sale!! I have also included my review of this fantastic read!!

Definitely, Maybe in Love by Ophelia London is on sale for $.99 now! Spread the word!

TitleDefinitely, Maybe in Love by Ophelia London
Age group: New Adult
Genre: Contemporary Romance
Publisher: Entangled: Embrace
Scheduled to release: October 28, 2013

BLURB:
Her theory of attraction is about to get a new angle...

Spring Honeycutt wants two things: to ace her sustainable living thesis and to save the environment. Both seem hopelessly unobtainable until her college professor suggests that with a new angle, her paper could be published. Spring swears she’ll do whatever it takes to ensure that happens.

“Whatever it takes,” however, means forming a partnership with the very hot, very privileged, very conceited Henry Knightly.

Henry is Spring's only hope at publication, but he's also the über-rich son of a land developer and cash-strapped Spring’s polar opposite. Too bad she can't help being attracted to the way he pushes her buttons, both politically and physically. As they work on her thesis, Spring finds there's more to Henry than his old money and argyle sweaters…but can she drop the loud-and-proud act long enough to let him in? Suddenly, choosing between what she wants and what she needs puts Spring at odds with everything she believes in.

Definitely, Maybe in Love is a modern take on Pride and Prejudice that proves true love is worth risking a little pride.

My Review:
After reading Definitely Maybe in Love I will never look at cranberries the same again. Ophelia London has become one of my favorite auto-buy authors. Her writing style is humorous, witty, and her stories flow so well. Definitely Maybe in Love is a story where appearances are always not what they seem and love can come from those who you least expect. Henry is total swoon worthy and I think I loved him from the moment he appeared. He was arrogant and a little snooty, but he had a heart of gold. Spring is that girl that I think we can all identify. She spent so much time trying to stand out from the crowd that she lost herself a little along the way but with the help of a few cranberries, her heart would never be the same. Henry and Spring’s story is a little unpredictable, but filled with many heartwarming moments that will stay with you long after the story is over. I loved absolutely everything about this book. I finished it with a smile on my face and immediately looked to see what book Ophelia was releasing next. Impatiently waiting on her next book!

Made in Nashville

If you are a fan of country music, Nashville or just hot guitar players, then Made in Nashville is perfect for you!  Check out the blurb:

Synopsis:
An on-stage attack left Honor Blackwood with more scars than just the one on her face. It’s been ten years since she left her spot as Nashville’s brightest country music star. Is now the time to return? And is she brave enough to do it?

Country rebel and rock star, Jared ‘Jed’ Marshall is hot property on the Tennessee music scene in more ways than one. He’s wild, he’s sexy and everybody wants a piece of him. But when he sets his sights on Honor, is it pure attraction or just distraction on his mind?

Honor’s record label sign the ex-boyfriend that dumped her and suddenly going back to her old life is harder than she thought. Can she get a new contract? Will she get to perform at the Marlon Festival? Or will Dan Steele destroy everything?

When a secret from the past becomes public knowledge it’s no longer just about the music. Are all the people in her life lying to her to get what they want? And who is really behind the anonymous gifts she keeps getting sent?

Join the country scene to find out!

I have been a fan of Mandy Baggot for a couple of years and have many of her books on my Kindle just waiting to be read.  After reading the synopsis for Made in Nashville, it was quickly pushed to the head of the list.  I was hooked after the first chapter and had a hard time putting it down when life seemed to get in the way.  It's okay to forget to feed your kids, right?? Just kidding!(maybe...) As I read Made in Nashville I felt as if I was watching a really good television drama and the visions were perfect in my mind.  While I'm a more traditional country music fan, I found myself head over heels for Jed Marshall.  He's a wild alpha male who loves his family and a true southern gentleman with a few rough edges.  Honor, a quiet, more conservative country music artist, was a perfect balance for this bad boy.  Their relationship was hot and sweet from the beginning and it only grew as the story progressed.  The angst was light, their relationship was mature, and their struggles were real.  I felt Honor's transformation was quick, but it worked well in the story.  My only complaint is that the name Vince Gill was a little over used.  It was funny in the beginning, but the joke went a little stale.  Steamy-ness is hot, with one very tasteful scene.

Are you All In?

Recently I had the opportunity to read a new to me book from a new to me author.  All In by Ann Garner is the second book in a series, but can be read as a stand alone.  Check out the synopsis!

For Grace Marsh there had never been a doubt that she was meant to be with Grant Michaels. From the moment she had met her brothers’ best friend she had known he was the one for her, and after two years together it seemed that he felt the same.
Until the night he knocks on her door and sends her entire world into a tailspin when he breaks her heart.
Jacob Ross was the American dream. The son of a football legend who was well on his way to a place by his father’s side in the NFL hall of fame. Until the day he walked away from it all without looking back.

A chance meeting between them finally puts Grace on the path toward putting her heart back together. But can she make a future with Jacob when she keeps getting pulled back into the past? Can she prove to him that she’s All In, or will she lose it all before it even really begins?

The story sucked me in from the beginning and I loved the writing.  Grace is a tough, tells-it-like-she-sees-it girl who has had her heart broken by the only boy she's ever loved.  Jacob is the good looking jock who has experienced a tragedy that pulled him away from the game he loved.  They meet, and the sparks are immediate.  I liked the friendship between Jacob and Grace, but felt her relationship escalated quickly when compared to her reflections of her relationship with Grant.  The story line was good, maybe a little predictable, but the small subplots kept the story moving along.  The characters were likable and I did feel a connection to them.   I will admit to a few tears and loved the direction of the last few chapters, but felt like the ending was wrapped up a little to quickly.  Steamyness is Medium/Hot with a couple of semi-graphic scenes.  I look forward to reading the next book in the series.
